Echoes of the Past: Addressing Old Myths in the Wake of the NYT’s ADHD Piece
The past few weeks have been confusing and exasperating, both personally and professionally, for those of us in the ADHD community. A feature article in the New York Times Magazine, Have We Been Thinking About A.D.H.D. All Wrong? included misinformation and scare tactics that took me back to when I first started ADHD coaching in the 90’s and encountered people who did not believe ADHD was real and promoted the “just try harder” approach for neurodivergent students.
This article, regardless of the intention, has had a devastating impact on countless individuals and families, resurfacing old wounds, myths, and misconceptions that many of us have fought to dispel.
In response to the article, I am grateful that experts in ADHD research and treatment have been speaking out and providing accurate information to the public. My continued concern, however, is that of the millions of people who read the NY Times article, only a handful will seek out more information to validate the journalist’s remarks.
To help you get accurate information about ADHD, I am sharing the a four-part video series by Russell Barkley, Ph. D, a preeminent expert in ADHD, and a lengthy response from ADDitude Magazine which provides links to additional information you might find valuable.
